Depressive disorders
Do women and men have the same symptoms?
Depression is diagnosed in the same way in women and men, although they may experience different symptoms. Women are more likely to express sadness, ruminate (thinking negatively about the same thoughts), cry, and show a lack of interest. In men, depression is more often manifested through physical fatigue, alcohol or drug use, insomnia, feelings of guilt, aggression, and a greater propensity for suicide. These differences may be due to their distinct roles in society, as for men, expressing sadness or crying can be associated with a lack of masculinity.
